Lateral epicondylitis — aka tradie elbow — is the slow-burn injury driver for sparkies twisting a screwdriver all shift. Carpal tunnel-style tingling in the first three fingers after a long day on the ratchet or the wrench. Grip endurance dropping by mid-shift so the last two hours feel twice as heavy as the first two. And the wrist mobility loss that makes overhead drilling and pry-bar work brutal. Plus the night flares — lying on the bad arm, waking up with tingling fingers, sleep wrecked before the alarm goes off.
On-the-job triggers: sparkies on screwdrivers and side-cutters for ten hours. Diesel mechanics on ratchets, pullers, and brake-bleed holds. Carpenters on the hammer and the chisel. Plumbers on the wrench and the basin wrench in tight spaces. Anyone prying with a bar, drilling overhead, or driving lag bolts by hand.
Forearm tendon load builds the same way every shift — small loads, thousands of reps, no rest between the bad ones. The recipe for lateral epicondylitis and grip-endurance loss is sitting in most tradies' everyday tool use.
Run all four in order. Each takes under a minute. They tell you whether you're dealing with an active flare (skip the loaded exercises today) or just end-of-shift wear (run the full block). Don't chase a sharp signal — flag it and tell the AI Coach next time you check in.

Forearm rested on the knee, hand hanging off the edge holding a tin of paint or a light hammer drill. Lower slowly over 3–4 seconds, lift back up. Targets the lateral epicondylitis tendon for rehab.
Squeeze and hold a rolled-up tea towel as hard as you can without the shoulders creeping up. Endurance over max — drop the test if your shoulders shrug.
Band around the fingers and thumb, open against the band. Forearm extensor endurance — counts toward grip, not just bulk.
Palms together at the chest, roll the wrists in a full circle in both directions. Slow. Mobility for overhead reach — what this drills matters for the screwdriver and the pry bar alike.
Three minutes. Sink or bucket. Run it before the lights go out — not after you've already rolled onto the bad arm and woken up three times with tingling fingers.
60 seconds each side right after end of shift — or a strapped ice pack, 2 × 5 min — to take inflammation out of the tendons. IFF the wrist has been flaring. Skip if it's not, contrast soak is better.
For non-flared wrists after end of shift. 1 minute hot, 30 seconds cold, × 3 reps per side, ends cold. Drives blood flow through the tendons post-shift — the recovery step before a flare starts.
Hug a pillow so the wrist doesn't get bent under the head or torso all night. If a wrist is in a current flare, prop it on a small folded towel instead of letting it rest on a hard surface.
These don't take extra time. They take one decision each — once at the start of the shift. Each one takes load off the lateral epicondylitis tendon, the carpal tunnel, or the wrist-extensor chain that builds the flare.

Grip fatigue usually feels like tired or burning muscles after load, while tingling or numbness in the hand can point to nerve irritation, but symptoms overlap and cannot diagnose themselves. Note which fingers are affected, when it happens, and whether it wakes you. Persistent or worsening tingling, marked weakness, or dropping tools needs assessment.
A neutral-position brace can be useful for a short period during a flare or at night if bending the wrist aggravates symptoms, but it should not be cranked tight or worn as permission to keep hammering through pain. If it increases numbness, causes swelling, or you keep needing it, get advice on the cause and fit.
Not every sore wrist needs imaging or nerve testing. A clinician can check the history, grip, sensation, movement, and neck or elbow contribution first, then decide whether a scan or nerve test would change the plan. Get prompt care after trauma, with progressive numbness, or with marked weakness.
Modify rather than white-knuckle it: keep the wrist closer to neutral, use a thicker handle, swap hands when safe, rotate repetitive jobs, and take short breaks before the grip fails. Stop the task if pain or tingling escalates, you lose control of a tool, or the hand feels weak. Worsening neurological symptoms need medical advice.
New or quickly worsening weakness, trouble opening and closing the hand, repeated dropping of tools, numbness that does not settle, or symptoms spreading up the arm should not be worked through. Seek prompt medical assessment, especially after trauma. Sudden severe weakness or loss of sensation is an emergency.
